The Capital District Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a hidden gem of 3,982 acres that offers seven trails totaling nine miles to discover. This WMA is located at the southern end of a geologic feature known as the Rensselaer Plateau and is comprised of conifer and hardwood forests that resemble the Adirondacks in terms of flora and fauna. Trails meander through the woods and are a favorite place for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Visitors to this WMA are treated to spectacular scenery any time of year, as the trails take you along peat bogs, waterfalls, old charcoal pits, streams, and ponds. Visitors can also find young forest restoration areas, which provide high-quality habitat for a variety of wildlife that depend on these transitional forests. You can also admire the panoramic vista that looks out across the Cherry Plain towards Butternut Hill, Eagle Rock, and Mt. Greylock, it even offers a glimpse of Misery Mountain in Massachusetts. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
Safety Note: Hunting and trapping occur on the property. Wearing blaze orange while in the field is recommended for all visitors during those seasons.
